Winter 2013

December 5th, -0 temps, blowing and drifting snow. It's time to think of winter work, cleaning closets, bookcases, and looking through containers packed away from the busy summer months.

Thanksgiving 2013

I missed my girls today, we had a house full, lots of stories, laughter, and food. Danika was a great help in the kitchen, and I certainly appreciate all of the good food everyone brought.  Some pictures from Thanksgiving 2013.

Oh Deer

This fall we noticed the deer population seemed to be in decline.  Will spent early mornings dressed in orange sitting in his deer stand, only to report he'd only seen a couple of does.  I didn't think about deer as I drove home from work Monday.  After all hunting season was over and the deer were settled in the woods again. When I was about a mile from Wild Flower, a big buck jumped out of the ditch and into the Toyota.

Winter decorations

  • I enjoyed an afternoon in the woods with the branch trimmer, four wheeler and trailer. The end result is winter decorations for the front porch

August 20

We celebrated our 14th anniversary. Our guests were Kiazer and Kolby. Kolby came to live with us only a week ago, and Kiazer is a reluctant mentor. He is a good natured retriever with alot of energy!  Will and I dined at Spankey's on Rose Lake.

The pickup

This 1979-1980 model Ford pickup was purchased new. The intent was to drive it to Alaska, as Gramma and Grampa were retiring that year. Gramma 62, and Grampa 65.  Well, they made the trip and the pickup put on many many more miles until it came to rest in the farm yard only a few short years ago-to be  replaced by a Chevy-Trail Blazer-no less.

We remember the seasons- summer and winter-seeing this yellow pickup come up the road. We were always happy to see Grampa and Gramma. They enjoyed every day and got a kick out of seeing what Dwight was up to or keeping track of the nephews, Roger and Darell. They came to check on us, to  help out if we were in the middle of some project, to give a little advice,  tell a joke or a story.

When anyone asked when he would be buying a new pickup, he would say "Not until this one is paid for-I have 1 more payment to make" This was followed by a good laugh!

When the bulls got out, or we had an errant cow, we could count on the yellow pickup to go over the bull holes, gopher mounds, and anything else in the way. This was much faster than the horses and could go into reverse in a split second when the cow or bull turned to run the other way.

The box always carried what was necessary; fencing tools, wire, duct tape, a hammer, vice grip, log chain, and the fuel tank. Before Fuel was so expensive, the Oil Company would deliver the fuel to the farm a couple of times a year. But fuel prices started to fluctuate widely - and it seemed to be the sensible thing to do-buy fuel when the price was down. The cab had the extra pair of gloves, a farm hat, more tools and engine oil just in case. We always knew when the yellow pickup came, the solutions to any of the problems we were experiencing could be solved.

In 1997, when the big storm hit-It was the yellow pickup and Grampa that came by to rescue Elizabeth and Laura  from a house without heat, electricity, or running water. Kristin and I stayed behind as we were calving. The heater from the yellow pickup must have felt wonderful that day!!

Every morning-early, the yellow pickup would take Grampa to Sheldon for coffee, that was rounded out by a stop at the elevator, and the post office. He would be home for the second "coffee/tea" of the day and he and Gramma would read the paper. Often they would get in the yellow pickup and go for a "drive" -check the crops, neighbors, and reminisce about days in Owego.

Yesterday we were at the farm. The scrap iron guys were there to clean up the yard. Jesse stopped by to buy the drill, Roger, Darell, and Dwight were there. Ralph came by to buy a couple of 'Big Mows'. Gramma stayed in the house for a while, but by tea time, she was sitting in the car-said it was 'too chilly in the house'. We watched the crusher take the combine like an aluminum soda can and crush it.

I said to Elizabeth- "I can't be here tomorrow when the yellow pickup goes" It's just so sad. Elizabeth responded by reminding me-the "metal in the yellow pickup will go to make a new pickup for Zane to drive someday"  We walked back to the house, to find Gramma sitting in the car again-ready to go "home".......

This is the end of a wonderful era-the yellow pickup is gone.
May the new era be as rich and as fulfilling as the past.
                                                                    Thank you Elizabeth

UFFDA

This past week the 3 of us went to the farm. Will and I spent most of the day outside, but checked in frequently on Gramma.
During lunch we were seated at the round table built by George Ick. (Grandpa was always proud of this sturdy little table) Will on one side, Gramma on the other, and me- I was at the sink and I heard this conversation.....
Gramma to Will......................"What does that sign mean?"
She was referring to the needlepoint work hanging at the end of the hutch in the dining room.
Will to Gramma......................"I think it means United Future Farmers of the Department of Agriculture"
Gramma................................."Mmm"

A few minutes later when I returned to my spot at the table

Will to me............................."What does that sign mean that's hanging there"
            Pointing to the needlepoint

Me to Will and Gramma......"UFFDA"

It is what it is  OR   It is what you think it is

Mind over Matter

OK, spring finally arrived. We were waiting with projects lined up for several weeks.
The first nice day -lucky for us, Elizabeth was home on a break-we stained the deck, both front and back.
Immediately, Will leased a sod cutter, and we begin the landscaping project-to be completed before the upcoming wedding.

Later that evening Will complained of a headache and feeling tired
Elizabeth said-'I sure hope I don't come down with something now!!'
I thought-'I sure hope I don't get sick, wonder what I can do to stay healthy?'
Laura said-'Is Will really sick, hope I don't get it!'

Well- Will coughed, I coughed, Elizabeth reported she wasn't feeling well, Laura woke up with a sore throat and actually ate broccoli and carrots for lunch.
and
Gramma coughed................

Me to Gramma- "Sounds like you have the start of a cold, as I hear you cough some."
Gramma- Taken aback- "I do not have a cold, if you heard a cough, it was because I swallowed wrong"
Me- "Well, I asked because it seems I have a cold and I was wondering how you were feeling"
Gramma- "I'm feeling fine, you can keep YOUR COLD, I don't want it."  and adding "there's nothing wrong with the way I feel"

So we will see- is it possible to believe you aren't going to get sick, and actually stay well?  How much power is in positive thought?

The road ditches disappear

February 2013, Two Monday's in a row the snow and wind closed roads and piled layer after layer of snow flakes in the yard. This is our reminder of all the snow removal that needed to be done by Joe and Will before we could go anywhere.

The little boy in our life

I just came back from visiting the cutest little boy I could ever imagine. He entertained us with making so many different faces we couldn't stop watching him. He loves his mom and dad, and reminds them that- he is here and a part of the family. He met Auntie Bet Bet and will soon meet Auntie Laura. How much fun it will be.

My only regret - no pictures to remember this eventful trip to Idaho.

Winter wonderland

OH, the weather outside is ....................

The fire is so .............We have no place to go (roads are blocked) so let it snow

January

No doubt today-it's January. 3 degrees out, and yesterdays rain turned to ice everywhere. Our front sidewalk is glazed with clear ice.

January or March......

Yesterday, January 10th our thermometer registered 42 degrees at one point. Before this we had a beautiful blanket of snow covering the ground, and covering the things that didn't get done in the fall-like the flower bed.......January thaw makes the world outside our windows look very much like early spring.

Cabin fever was about to set in, so last night we went to the Cornfield for burgers and fries, chicken strip basket, and carrot/hamburger soup and sandwich. Only one other table was occupied. Will bought bird feed, that of course was on sale....We enjoyed the change of pace from dining at home.

I am not sure what today will bring. Will called during his drive to Fargo for Jason's appointment to say the roads were glare ice. I'm glad for the dinner out last night as it might be awhile before the three of us venture out again.

Play-off

Competition........... Between Laura and Will, We had the computer, dictionary, and scrabble dictionary out. New Years Day-2013

Projects

Over the holidays 2012, we played scrabble, rook, cooked, and fished. A couple projects that we enjoyed over the past couple of weeks ..........
And the cooperative effort.......Laura spearheaded the completion of the 1000 piece puzzle

Where did the past few months go?

A recent text from Liz told me to update the blog.....Yes, the last entry was in August. So what happened during the next few months? I guess I started working fall semester, and spent hours preparing for the classroom, writing tests, and correcting.
Laura and I rode horse only a few times, and went for daily walks with Kia

Gramma turned 94 years old this fall, we had a dinner out at the Cornfield Cafe before the ice and snow came.

Winter came, along with frosty tree branches and a blanket of snow.
